I have written extensively about how Think Gum® can improve memory on this blog, but I haven’t mentioned that fact that Xylitol containing chewing gum like Think Gum can improve dental hygiene. A recent article in the NY Times by Ezekiel J. Emanuel makes the argument for encouraging the chewing of sugar-free gum sweetened with Xylitol during school. Cavities are caused certain types of bacteria which breakdown sugar left on our teeth and release acid. This acid dissolves away our enamel creating cavities.
Unlike regular sugar, Xylitol is a natural sweetener that can’t be broken down by these harmful bacteria in to acid. Because the act of chewing increases the amount of saliva, the acids that are produced by bacteria are more quickly neutralized. In fact, “A 1989-93 randomized study of children around age 10 in Belize showed an even greater benefit; chewing xylitol-sweetened gum decreased the risk of cavities by up to 70 percent, and a follow-up study showed that the benefit lasted for up to five years.”
So there you have it, chewing Think Gum® is great idea for students who want to keep there brains AND their teeth in tip-top shape!
